Discover the antioxidant effect of hindered amine light stabilizer (HALS) silicones at IFSCC 2024
We’re thrilled to announce our participation in the upcoming IFSCC event, taking place from October 14th-17th at the stunning Iguazu Falls, Brazil. We warmly invite industry professionals from around the world to connect with Elkem and explore our cutting-edge silicone innovations.
Men’s grooming continues to be a growing market as men increasingly focus on both their appearance and self-care in daily routines. While hygiene products dominate the male grooming sector, the market is now ripe for new products offering additional benefits that align with men’s increasing awareness of beauty and health.
Elkem has discovered that HALS (hindered amine light stabilizer) silicone molecules provide excellent hair conditioning and sensory features typically seen with amino functional silicone with added antioxidant benefit for improved skin health. This ingredient could help formulators create products with multiple benefits that are sure to resonate with health-conscious male consumers.
What are antioxidants?
Antioxidants are substances that neutralize free radicals, protecting healthy cells in the body from oxidative damage. Oxidative stress occurs when free radicals cause the breakdown of essential biomolecules, like lipids in cell membranes and fatty acids stored in cells.
This oxidative stress, triggered by free radicals, is linked to the onset of chronic conditions such as cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer’s, neurodegenerative disorders, and age-related diseases like Parkinson’s.
By supporting the body's natural defense against free radicals, antioxidants play a crucial role. This is why it’s important for cosmetic products to incorporate antioxidants, offering additional protection for the body against oxidative damage.
Antioxidant effect of hindered amine light stabilizer (HALS) silicone
Elkem’s MIRASIL™ ADMH product line is the latest technology of amino functional silicones with HALS chemistry. These products are focused on the male hair care market and show efficacy in protecting hair and scalp from free radicals through a peroxide value assay and protein carbonylation measurement of lipid peroxidation and protein damage.
The exposure of hair follicles to free radicals may result in premature hair loss, decreased shine, and weakening of the hair. The use of antioxidants in hair products can reduce this damage.
